The Matrix began with the Wachowskis' 1999 film, in which hacker Thomas Anderson learns that the life he knows is a simulation created by machines and assumes the name Neo. Morpheus and Trinity introduce him to the human resistance and the physical world hidden beyond the Matrix. The film series continued with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, followed by The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. The wider franchise also includes The Animatrix and licensed games that expand or revisit its conflict, characters, and mythology. Warner Bros. Discovery lists another Matrix installment in its slate beyond 2027, but has not announced a title, story, cast, or release date. The unnamed project is separate from Resurrections, and Matrix 5 has not been announced as its official title.
