Current status

Ghost of Yōtei is a released PlayStation 5 game from Sucker Punch Productions. It launched on October 2, 2025, with support for PlayStation 5 Pro. The game is a standalone experience rather than a direct story sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Its story is set in 1603, more than 300 years after Jin Sakai’s era, in the lands around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, the region now known as Hokkaido.

The protagonist is Atsu, a lone mercenary who returns to Ezo to hunt the six outlaws responsible for killing her family sixteen years earlier. Players can follow the main revenge story or explore the region, meet allies, investigate local locations and collect upgrades before continuing the hunt.

The next major release is Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, scheduled for October 1, 2026. It adds the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion, the Most Wanted single-player combat survival mode and additional quality-of-life features. Existing owners can buy a Complete Edition Upgrade for $14.99 in the United States. The October 1 patch also adds some features to every owner, whether or not they buy the upgrade.

Atsu and the world of Ezo

The setting changes the kind of open world Atsu explores. Sucker Punch describes Ezo as a frontier filled with grasslands, snowy tundra and unexpected dangers rather than the organized samurai territories of Tsushima. The official game page presents travel through snowy ridges, grass, wildflowers and rocky terrain, with the PS5 hardware used for long sightlines, fast loading and more detailed weather and vegetation.

Atsu has her own history, weapons and relationships, and the game’s map supports a wandering route through northern Japan. Optional activities can enhance her abilities, so players can leave the main route and return with additional upgrades before continuing the revenge pursuit.

The game is built for PS5 only. PlayStation’s FAQ states that there is no PS4 version, and the current official page lists PS5 as the platform. Online features require a PlayStation account; multiplayer also requires a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Combat and weapon choices

Atsu’s combat is based on precise weapon use, defensive timing and switching tools for the threat in front of her. The official gameplay presentation highlights new weapons and ways to personalize the journey, while the PS5 page specifically calls out katana combat, the bow and arrow and the grappling hook. These are distinct parts of play: the katana handles close-range duels, the bow supports ranged attacks and the grappling hook helps reach or cross parts of the environment.

The game’s open-world structure supports different approaches through combat upgrades and equipment. Sucker Punch has also described the combat as more flexible than in Ghost of Tsushima. Armor, weapon availability, difficulty and encounter type change which option is useful, so this guide does not present a universal build or claim that one weapon is best.

New Game Plus makes this system easier to revisit. After the main story is complete, New Game Plus lets players restart Atsu’s quest with previously earned weapons, abilities and armor. It also adds harder difficulty options, two Trophies, Ghost Flowers for a new vendor, more than 30 cosmetics, ten charms and an extra upgrade tier for existing armor and weapons. The mode arrived in free patch 1.100.000 on November 24, 2025.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends

Legends is the game’s online co-op mode and a free update for Ghost of Yōtei owners. It arrived in patch 1.5 on March 10, 2026, with March 11 launch timing in some territories including Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The mode includes four classes:

  • Samurai: can use the ōdachi and has access to the broadest range of weapon types.
  • Archer: uses the yari and can carry an additional ranged weapon.
  • Mercenary: uses dual katana and utility-focused abilities.
  • Shinobi: uses the kusarigama and stealth-focused skills.

Every class can use a katana and a ranged weapon, but each class specializes in a different combat system. Class-specific armor cosmetics come from completing feats, while higher difficulty challenges can reward Legendary weapons and gear.

Legends’ Survival mode supports a team of up to four players. Waves of enemies attack one of four maps, and the team fights to control territory. Holding a location enables a Blessing; losing it triggers a Curse that gives the team a disadvantage. Story mode pairs two players for twelve missions. Each set of three Story missions unlocks an Incursion, a four-player assault on a Yōtei Six stronghold that ends with a supernatural boss such as the Spider, Oni, Kitsune or Snake.

The official announcement also described a Raid against the Dragon and Lord Saito. Players should check the latest PlayStation update before treating every Raid detail as final, because the original announcement listed its patch version as to be announced. The Legends lobby includes combat and archery practice, Zeni Hajiki and Bamboo Strike activities.

What changes on October 1, 2026

The Complete Edition’s main story expansion is Echoes of Sekigahara. It moves between the present and flashbacks to Atsu’s time on the mainland, introduces Nagato from Atsu’s past and opens a previously unseen valley once inhabited by the Snake and his Vipers. The expansion adds new enemies, heavy weapons, armor sets and dyes.

Most Wanted is a single-player combat survival mode with roguelike structure. Players accept bounties to begin runs, defeat enemies to earn perks and unlock additional playable characters. The announced examples include Atsu with dual katana, Oyuki with the kusarigama and Nagato with a yari.

All existing owners receive a free October 1 patch with Beauty of Yōtei, a screensaver-like environment view, new Watanabe Mode tracks, an option to keep one armor set’s appearance while using another set’s stats and a new high-contrast accessibility option. The patch is version 2.0 globally on October 1, with October 2 timing in some territories.
