Xenoblade Chronicles follows Shulk and his companions across the bodies of the Bionis and Mechonis after the mechanical Mechon attack their home. Shulk learns that the Monado can damage the invaders and show him possible future events, turning those visions into both a story problem and a combat system the party can react to. The journey moves through connected regions populated by settlements, wildlife and powerful Unique Monsters.

Combat runs in real time while the player positions one party member and chooses Arts with different ranges, effects and cooldowns. Equipment, weapon skills and gems shape each character, while the party gauge can revive allies or trigger a Chain Attack. Exploration also supports quests, affinity between characters and optional encounters, so preparation and party composition matter beyond the main route.

The original Wii game launched in Japan on June 10, 2010 and was later released in other regions and on New Nintendo 3DS. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition arrived on Nintendo Switch on May 29, 2020 with updated presentation and the Future Connected epilogue. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launched on June 9, 2026 with 60 fps play, higher resolutions, an Ether Jet for faster travel and fully voiced Heart-to-Heart conversations; it contains the Switch game and its additions rather than a separate sequel.
