Undertale begins with a human child falling into the Underground, a world where monsters live. You explore rooms, speak with the people you meet and look for a way back to the surface. The story is funny in places, but your decisions matter: you can attack a monster, find another way through a fight or leave some encounters without hurting anyone. It is worth reading the dialogue rather than treating every meeting as a battle you must win by force.

The battle screen is easy to recognise once you know its parts. A monster appears at the top; along the bottom are FIGHT, ACT, ITEM and MERCY. ACT lets you try an interaction specific to that monster, ITEM opens your carried items, and MERCY is where you can try to spare or flee. When it is the monster's turn, you move a small heart inside a bordered box to avoid its attack pattern. Your HP sits above the buttons. The screenshots in the gallery show both the four-button menu and the heart inside an attack box, so you can match those words to the actual screen before playing.

Toby Fox developed and published Undertale, first released on PC and Mac on September 15, 2015. Linux and console versions came later. This is the original game, not Deltarune, which is a separate follow-up. If you are new to Undertale, the battle menu is the best place to start: understand what each button does, then listen to what the monster says before choosing your next action.
