Tearaway is a PlayStation Vita adventure set in a world made to look as if it has been cut, folded and glued from paper. You guide one of two messengers, iota or atoi, who carries a message meant for you, the player. Paths open as you explore, meet paper creatures and work out how to help the messenger past an obstacle. Its story treats the person holding the Vita as part of the world rather than an invisible controller.

The Vita’s features are central to play. When you see a clear surface marked with PlayStation symbols, try the touch panel on the back of the system. A tap can beat a paper drum and launch the messenger; on other marked surfaces, your finger appears in the world to push something aside. The front touchscreen has different uses, such as cutting a paper shape. Cameras also let the game bring your face or surroundings into a scene. Media Molecule developed Tearaway, which launched in the United States on November 22, 2013 for PlayStation Vita. This page covers that original handheld game. Tearaway Unfolded for PlayStation 4 is a later adaptation with different controls, not the same 2013 release. The original US Vita package is rated E (Everyone) by the ESRB for Mild Cartoon Violence.
