Slay the Spire turns each climb into a series of small decisions. You choose a route through a tower, fight enemies by playing cards and add new cards after many battles. An attack card deals damage; a defensive card can help you survive the next hit. You have a limited amount of energy each turn, so you cannot play every card in your hand. The game shows what an enemy plans to do before you finish your turn, giving you a chance to attack, defend or use a potion.

Each run gives you a different path, set of fights and card rewards. Pick cards that help the deck you already have, not just cards that look strong on their own. Relics are items with effects that stay with you during a run, while potions are usually single-use help. Losing a fight ends that run, but you can start another climb and try different choices. The card library and shop show more possibilities as you play, so you do not need to memorize hundreds of cards before your first attempt.

Mega Crit first offered Slay the Spire in Early Access in 2017. The full PC release arrived on January 23, 2019, which is the year used for this catalog entry. Console and mobile versions followed. This is the original Slay the Spire, not its sequel. The gallery shows actual combat, an event, the card library and a shop so you can see what you will be choosing during a run.
