Maya Amano is an investigative reporter in Sumaru City when murders at Seven Sisters High School point to a ritual called the Joker's Curse. The investigation brings Maya face to face with the Joker and pulls returning characters from Persona 2: Innocent Sin into a crisis where rumors can alter reality. Katsuya Suou, Ulala Serizawa, and Baofu join the adult-leaning cast as the group tracks the curse and the forces behind it.

Battles combine traditional turn-based commands with Personas, summoned spirits that supply attacks, defenses, and skills. The Contact system lets up to three party members negotiate with demons for information or items, while the Rumor system lets the group spread rumors through conversations and change parts of the world or storyline. Persona combinations can also be ordered to create stronger attacks, so choosing contacts and arranging actions matters as much as raw levels.

Treat conversations as part of progression, not decoration: contact enemies when you need resources, and check rumor outcomes before committing to a change. The original game released for PlayStation in 2000. It is separate from the 2012 PSP remake, which has different presentation and an added scenario, and from Persona 2: Innocent Sin, the preceding game. Players new to the duology should read a spoiler-light recap of Innocent Sin before starting, because Eternal Punishment assumes that history.
