Papers, Please puts you in charge of an immigration booth in the fictional country of Arstotzka. Each person in the line hands you documents. You read the day’s official bulletin, compare their papers with the current rules, then stamp a passport to approve or deny entry. At first that can mean checking only a person’s country. Later you must look for expired dates, mismatched names and other problems while the line keeps moving.

The decisions have a personal cost. You are paid for processing entrants and must use that money for your family’s rent, food and heat. Some visitors also ask for help even when their documents break the rules, so there is more to a decision than finding an error. The game is mainly played with a mouse: drag a passport onto the desk, open the rulebook and use the red or green stamp. If you are starting for the first time, the linked day-one guide shows exactly where to look.
Lucas Pope released the original Windows and Mac game on August 8, 2013; Linux and other platforms followed. The ESRB rates the later PlayStation Vita version M (Mature 17+) in the US and Canada. That rating is specifically for the Vita listing, not a claim that the 2013 PC release carried an ESRB label.
