Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action adventure about Jin Sakai, a samurai trying to defend his island during a Mongol invasion. Jin knows how to fight face to face, but the invasion pushes him to use stealth and new tools as well. The story follows that tension while letting you choose which leads and side stories to pursue between major missions. It is fiction inspired by a historical setting, not a documentary about every event on the real island.

Instead of a constant arrow across the screen, the Guiding Wind points toward a destination you choose on the map. Golden birds, foxes and distant smoke can lead to other activities. Sword combat rewards watching the enemy: Stone stance helps against swordsmen, while later stances answer shields and spears. Blocking, parrying, dodging and changing stance matter more than simply pressing attack repeatedly. Exploration also has a practical payoff, with equipment, materials, shrines and health or Resolve improvements to find.

Sucker Punch Productions developed Ghost of Tsushima, and Sony Interactive Entertainment published the original PlayStation 4 release on July 17, 2020. The later Director's Cut brought Iki Island and versions for PS5 and PC. This page documents the original game and keeps the later edition separate in its explanation. New players can use our linked visual beginner guide to identify the map, combat stances and first upgrade screens.
