Disco Elysium begins with a detective waking up after a terrible night, unsure even of his own name. A man has been found dead behind the Whirling-in-Rags hostel, and your partner, Kim Kitsuragi, expects you to investigate. You search the streets of Martinaise, question people who often disagree with each other and slowly learn what has happened in the neighbourhood. The story deals with violence, addiction, politics and personal failure; it is written for a mature audience, even though you do not need to know the setting before you play.

This is a role-playing game built around reading, conversations and choices rather than conventional combat. Four attributes—Intellect, Psyche, Physique and Motorics—contain 24 skills. They speak up during conversations, help you notice details and affect the chance of passing a check. A failed check can close a route for now or lead to a different scene, so failure is often part of the story. Clothes can change skill values, and the Thought Cabinet lets you work through ideas that may change your detective. Keep an eye on both Health and Morale in the lower-left corner; losing either can end a run.

ZA/UM developed and published the original Windows PC game on October 15, 2019. The store now calls it Disco Elysium – The Final Cut, reflecting a later expanded edition with added voice work and content. That later name does not change the original 2019 release year. Versions for other systems arrived after the PC launch. This profile uses the original game’s official key art and developer-supplied screenshots, including actual menu screens that show how its unusual systems look.
