Cuphead and his brother Mugman lose a bet to the Devil. To make things right, they travel across the Inkwell Isles collecting contracts from a cast of strange bosses. The plot is easy to follow, but the fights demand practice. Each boss changes its attacks as the battle goes on, so a first attempt is often about watching what appears on screen and finding a safe place to stand. The game looks like a 1930s cartoon because Studio MDHR drew its animation by hand and paired it with watercolor backgrounds and jazz music.

This is a side-view action game. You move, jump, dash and fire while avoiding projectiles and other hazards. A pink object is usually an opportunity to parry: jump toward it and press jump again while airborne. Successful parries help fill the meter used for stronger attacks. Between stages, the island map lets you choose a fight or a run-and-gun level, and coins can be spent on different weapons and charms. The shop item still needs to be equipped from the map before it changes your next attempt. One person can play alone as Cuphead or Mugman, or two people can play local co-op together.
Studio MDHR developed and published Cuphead for Xbox One and PC on September 29, 2017. It later reached other platforms, and The Delicious Last Course is a separate expansion rather than the original game's launch.
