Child of Light follows Aurora, a young princess who wakes in the magical world of Lemuria and wants to get home. The world looks like a watercolor storybook: Aurora moves across forests, ruins and other painted places while the glowing firefly Igniculus helps her. You explore from the side, so the route stretches left and right on the screen instead of opening into a huge 3D map. If you are new, follow the next path, speak to the people you meet and look for places where the firefly’s light can reveal or affect something nearby.

When a battle starts, the view changes to a turn-based screen. Aurora and her companions pick actions from a menu, and a timeline at the bottom shows when characters are close to taking a turn. Igniculus can help in battles as well as puzzles. This is why Child of Light feels different from a fast platform game even though Aurora explores by moving and jumping through side-view areas. The gallery shows both the exploration view and the actual battle menu, making that switch easy to recognize before you play. Its fairy-tale writing and illustrated landscapes are part of the adventure rather than decoration around a separate game.
Ubisoft Montréal developed Child of Light and Ubisoft published it. PlayStation’s North American launch post and the PC Steam store date it to April 29, 2014; Ubisoft’s current store lists April 30. The game reached Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, and Wii U, with a PlayStation Vita version following later. This is the 2014 game, not a different title with a similar name.
