Apex Legends is a free-to-play hero shooter built around fast squad decisions, distinct character abilities, and weapon-based combat. In Battle Royale, Duos or Trios drop onto a large map, search buildings and supply areas for weapons, armor, ammunition, and attachments, then rotate through the shrinking Ring while competing squads fight for position. The objective is to become the last squad alive. Respawn Beacons and teammate recovery systems give a team ways to return a fallen player, so a lost fight does not always end the match.

Players choose from Legends with different tactical, passive, and ultimate abilities. A useful squad combines those kits with practical communication, movement, cover, and timing. The in-game ping system lets teammates mark locations, items, enemies, and plans without relying on voice chat. Looting and loadout choices matter because weapon range, attachments, ammo, and healing supplies shape how a squad can take or avoid fights. Rotations become more important as the Ring closes and available space narrows.

Apex also includes modes outside its standard Battle Royale loop. Mixtape provides recurring multiplayer combat formats, while Wildcard uses a streamlined ruleset with simplified Legend, weapon, and looting systems. Ranked play adds a competitive progression path, and limited-time modes and seasonal takeovers periodically change the rules, maps, or objectives. The Outlands setting expands through in-game events, comics, and animated shorts, while seasonal updates adjust Legends, weapons, maps, and systems.

The game is available free on EA app, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Cross-progression is tied to a linked EA Account.
