Animal Crossing: New Horizons begins with a tent on an island that you gradually develop into a home. Fishing, catching insects, collecting fossils and gathering materials give you different reasons to explore. Wildlife changes with the season and time of day, while donations fill the museum with things you have found.

Decoration extends beyond your house. Place outdoor furniture, choose locations for residents’ homes and eventually reshape cliffs and waterways. DIY recipes turn gathered materials into tools and furnishings; shops and gifts provide other items. The appeal is returning to a place you have arranged yourself, rather than completing a fixed sequence of levels.
On the original Nintendo Switch edition, up to four residents can play together on one system. Visits using separate systems support up to eight players through local wireless or online play; online features require Nintendo Switch Online. These are different arrangements, so choosing to share a console is not the same as each person having a separate island.
The original Switch release dates to March 20, 2020. Nintendo also offers a separate Switch 2 Edition and upgrade pack; the multiplayer limits above describe the original Switch edition. This is a strong match for collecting, decorating and visiting friends, with seasonal discoveries that reward returning over time.
