The Odyssey earned an estimated $45.96 million worldwide over the weekend, narrowly beating Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $44.1 million. Christopher Nolan’s film is back at No. 1 on the global weekend chart.
It has not passed Spider-Man’s full theatrical total. The Odyssey has reached about $1.63 billion worldwide, while Brand New Day has crossed $2.4 billion. The Odyssey won this weekend; Spider-Man still leads the full run by roughly $780 million.
How did The Odyssey take No. 1 worldwide?
The Odyssey added roughly $33 million outside North America and $13 million domestically in its eighth weekend. Its international run supplied most of the total and kept the film ahead of a superhero release that opened two weeks later.
Spider-Man had led the global weekend chart since its July 31 debut. Its sixth weekend was still enormous, but The Odyssey finally moved ahead by less than $2 million.
Spider-Man is still ahead overall
Brand New Day remains the much bigger movie worldwide. Its $2.4 billion total puts it among the highest-grossing films ever, and it also stayed at No. 1 in the United States and Canada for a sixth straight weekend.
Spider-Man earned $18 million domestically over the three-day weekend. The Odyssey finished second there with $13 million. Nolan’s film won only after international markets were added.
Why is The Odyssey still holding so well?
The film is an R-rated adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, runs close to three hours, and was sold as a large-format theatrical event. Those are not the usual ingredients for an eighth-weekend comeback against Spider-Man.
Matt Damon leads The Odyssey as Odysseus, a war hero trying to reach home after the Trojan War. Brand New Day is Tom Holland’s fourth standalone Spider-Man film. One is a new screen version of an ancient story; the other belongs to one of Hollywood’s strongest franchises.
Its overseas total has now passed $1 billion, while the worldwide number has reached $1.63 billion. Nolan’s name, the IMAX presentation, and strong repeat business have kept it in theaters as newer releases came and went.
Spider-Man is still the bigger film by a wide margin. But an R-rated epic beating it in week eight is the reason this weekend stands out. Both runs are already huge.
