A man looking for his missing girlfriend turns to a recipe involving rainwater, horse manure and tiny creatures that can predict the future. That is the unusual starting point of Small Prophets, Mackenzie Crook's six-episode comedy, which comes to Apple TV on October 7 outside the United Kingdom.
Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep, a DIY-store worker whose girlfriend Clea has been missing for seven years. Sir Michael Palin plays his father, Brian, the person who gives him the recipe. Between his job, difficult neighbors and an unlikely friendship at work, Michael tries something most people would dismiss before opening the first jar.
The Apple TV date needs one important qualification: UK subscribers will get the series in 2027, not October 7. The show already aired on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer earlier in 2026, so this is its Apple TV arrival rather than its first appearance anywhere.
Why Michael starts making homunculi
Michael is still waiting for an answer about Clea. Seven years is a long time to keep living with an absence, and the show's premise gives his strange project a specific purpose: he wants to know what happened to the person he loves. He is not trying alchemy merely to liven up an uneventful weekend.
Brian's recipe promises a way to make homunculi: small magical spirits that can tell the future. Rainwater and horse manure are among the ingredients. Michael begins working on the mixture in his shed, bringing an improbable experiment into an otherwise familiar home-and-work routine.

The jars are therefore more than an odd decoration. They belong to the attempt to get an answer that ordinary waiting has not provided. That combination gives the show room for both comedy and a more painful situation: a man can be doing something ridiculous while his reason for doing it is easy to understand.
The trailer introduces the recipe and the idea that the creatures will answer truthfully. It also shows the practical problem of having a mysterious project in a shed when other people want to know what you are doing. Michael has to deal with curiosity and interruptions as well as the experiment itself.
Michael Palin is Brian, not Michael
With Palin's name high in the cast announcement, it would be easy to assume he plays the man making the homunculi. He does not. Pearce Quigley is Michael Sleep; Sir Michael Palin is his father, Brian. Brian supplies the recipe that leads Michael to begin the experiment.

That father-and-son connection matters to the premise. The idea does not arrive as an anonymous internet tip. It comes through someone Michael knows, which gives him a reason to take it seriously even while the method sounds unlikely.
The preview puts both men in the same ordinary domestic setting before moving into the stranger activity. Watching their conversations makes the situation easier to follow than imagining a fantasy series full of wizards. Small Prophets starts with recognizable people and places, then adds something they cannot explain through everyday experience.
Kacey, Gordon and the people around the shed
Michael's life does not stop at home. He works in a DIY store, where he becomes friends with Kacey, played by Lauren Patel. Their shared dislike of their manager, Gordon, is part of what brings them together. Crook plays Gordon as well as writing and directing the series.

That friendship gives Michael someone to talk to outside his family. It also places the unusual experiment alongside familiar workplace complaints. You do not need to believe in future-predicting creatures to recognize how two employees might connect over a manager who makes their day harder.
Jon Pointing plays Clive, and Sophie Willan plays Bev. Paul Kaye also appears in the cast. Michael's neighbors take an interest in what is happening in the shed, adding another problem to a project that is already difficult to explain without sounding strange.
Who’s who in Small Prophets?
More cast
- Mackenzie Crookas Gordon
- Jon Pointingas Clive
- Sophie Willanas Bev
These are different parts of Michael's day: Brian brings the recipe, Kacey brings the friendship, Gordon belongs to the workplace and the neighbors want to know about the shed. Keeping those relationships straight is more useful than treating the whole cast as people involved in one magical scheme.
What to expect from the trailer
Apple TV's trailer spends time on the recipe, Michael's question about Clea and the people interrupting his routine. The comedy comes from how the improbable project fits into an ordinary setting, rather than replacing that setting with a separate fantasy world.
There are jars, a shed and conversations about the creatures, but there is also a job to go to and a father to visit. The preview makes Michael's wish understandable before asking viewers to follow the alchemy. Whether the experiment can give him what he wants is something the series has to answer, not something the announcement settles.
The look of the show stays close to that everyday life. It was set and filmed around Manchester. The home, shop and neighborhood are part of the appeal for viewers who like a comedy to give its characters a place that feels lived in, even when the story includes something impossible.
Who made Small Prophets?
Mackenzie Crook created, wrote and directed the series. He also executive produces with Lisa Thomas, Christine Gernon and Emma Strain. Treasure Trove Productions and Blue House Productions made the show, with Sphere Abacus handling international distribution.
The first season has six episodes. That is a short commitment compared with a long-running network comedy, but it still leaves more room for Michael's relationships than a single film would. The premise brings together the missing girlfriend, the workplace friendship and the neighbors' curiosity within that season.
October 7 is not the UK Apple TV date
For viewers in the United States and other announced Apple TV territories outside the UK, the Apple TV launch is Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The U.S. catalog currently lists it as coming soon, so it is not yet available there at the time of this article.
The UK is different. Apple says UK subscribers will receive Small Prophets in 2027, without giving a specific date in that announcement. Its earlier BBC release and its later Apple TV release are separate availability windows; the October 7 date should not be read as applying to UK Apple subscribers.
The Small Prophets series page has the cast and regional viewing details. Before launch, the trailer is the place to meet Michael and see what those jars are for. The full series will tell us whether Brian's unlikely recipe can do more than give Michael another reason to keep waiting.
