Sandra Bullock stopped taking romantic comedies because she was tired of the criticism aimed at them. The decision pushed her toward dramatic roles. Now, after returning to theaters in Practical Magic 2, she says she misses comedy and wants to make more of it.
She did not announce a new rom-com. Her comments do explain why one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedy stars spent so much of her later career moving between drama, action, and darker stories.
Why did Sandra Bullock step away from rom-coms?
Bullock told Jennifer Aniston that the break was one of the few times she made a deliberate career decision. After years of being criticized for romantic comedies, she decided, “I need to stop right now with the rom-coms.”
By then, While You Were Sleeping, Forces of Nature, and Two Weeks Notice had made her one of the genre’s biggest stars. The movies found large audiences, but comedy was often treated as easier or less serious than drama. Bullock wanted roles that would show another side of her work.
Which movie sent her in a new direction?
Crash was the project Bullock chose when she wanted to use different skills. The 2004 ensemble drama won Best Picture, and her role as Jean Cabot was far removed from the warm, quick-witted leads audiences knew from her comedies.
The move worked. Bullock later won the Academy Award for The Blind Side and led Gravity. She never abandoned lighter movies completely: The Proposal became one of her biggest hits in 2009, and The Lost City brought her back to romantic adventure in 2022.

Yes, although she did not name a project. Bullock said she misses those movies and added, “I want to do nothing but that now.” When Aniston brought up old Two Weeks Notice bloopers, Bullock joked that they should “bring the funny back.”
Her current film is not a traditional rom-com. Practical Magic 2 is a fantasy sequel about sisters Sally and Gillian Owens and the curse surrounding their family. It still gives Bullock room for humor while reconnecting her with Nicole Kidman and a movie that became much more popular after its original release.
When could she return to comedy?
No new project has been announced. Bullock also said she feels exhausted after the Practical Magic 2 press tour and wants future work to fit around her children’s schedules. Productions outside Los Angeles would need to happen during the summer.
That leaves her next movie open. She has already discussed a possible Practical Magic 3 led by a younger generation, but Warner Bros. has not announced it. A separate romantic comedy would be a new choice, not a confirmed plan.
Bullock spent years proving that she could carry drama. She does not need another serious role to justify making people laugh. If she chooses a rom-com next, she will be returning to something she was already very good at.
