John Malkovich left the Venice Film Festival with some of the strongest acting buzz of the event. In Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, he plays Chris, an aging CIA agent sent to Easter Island in 1973 with Lee, played by Sam Rockwell.
The reaction has pushed Malkovich into early Oscar predictions. It is still September, no nomination is guaranteed, and most audiences have not seen the movie. But this is the first real sign that his performance could stay in the awards race.
Why is John Malkovich getting Oscar buzz?
Festival coverage repeatedly singled out Malkovich’s performance, especially the mix of anger, regret, and dark humor he brings to Chris. The role gives him a chance to be funny and unsettling without turning the character into a simple villain.
Malkovich has been nominated for an Oscar twice: for Places in the Heart in 1985 and In the Line of Fire in 1994. He has never won. When the subject came up in Venice, he played down the personal attention and said he was glad it helped the film get noticed.

What is Wild Horse Nine about?
The dark comedy follows CIA agents Chris and Lee on a trip to Easter Island shortly before the 1973 military coup in Chile. Their bureau chief, MJ, is played by Steve Buscemi. The cast also includes Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey.
McDonagh wrote and directed the film. His previous movies include Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin, both of which became major Oscar contenders after festival premieres.

Is the movie itself getting the same reaction?
Not completely. Malkovich’s work has drawn broad praise, while reviews of the full film have been more divided. Some critics responded to the script and performances; others were less convinced by the way the movie handles its political history.
That split does not remove Malkovich from the race, but it could affect how far the campaign goes. Searchlight will need to keep the performance visible once more people can watch the film and the rest of the season takes shape.
When will Wild Horse Nine be released?
Searchlight plans to release Wild Horse Nine in U.S. theaters on November 6, 2026. The official trailer is already available, and the movie is also scheduled to screen at TIFF on September 14.
Malkovich has gone nearly 33 years without another Oscar nomination. Wild Horse Nine may end that gap, but the next test comes when the film leaves the festival circuit and reaches regular audiences.
