Resident Evil opened PlayStation’s September 3 State of Play with a new look at Zach Cregger’s film. The trailer follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier sent to Raccoon City General Hospital just as a viral outbreak turns the city into a fight for survival. This is an original story, not another pass at Leon Kennedy’s Resident Evil 2 campaign. Cregger has described it as a story happening alongside that Raccoon City disaster, seen through someone who has no training for what comes next.
What does the trailer reveal?
The new footage puts Bryan in a snow-covered Raccoon City, carrying a medical delivery while buildings, cars, and streets become part of the danger. The setup is easy to follow: get the package to the hospital, stay alive, and work out why a routine job landed in the middle of a city-wide outbreak.
PlayStation’s recap frames the film as a race against time, but the more interesting choice is Bryan himself. He is not a trained police officer or an action hero. He is a normal person trying to move through a crisis that keeps changing around him, which puts the audience closer to the fear and confusion that define the early hours of a Resident Evil game.
Is this a Resident Evil 2 movie?
No. Cregger’s PlayStation Blog interview says the film borrows the world and survival-horror logic of Resident Evil 2 without retelling its plot. Bryan has his own route through the outbreak, and the story moves through different locations as each new area brings another threat.
The director also talked about carrying over the games’ rhythm: limited ammunition, a gradual move from a pistol to stronger weapons, healing items, and spaces that keep revealing new dangers. The movie does not need to copy every room to use that rhythm. Those details show what Cregger thinks makes Resident Evil feel like Resident Evil.
Who is in the Resident Evil cast?
Austin Abrams leads the film as Bryan. Sony’s official listing also names Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser in the cast. Cregger directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. The film comes from TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film, and Davis Films, with PlayStation Productions involved.
The casting choice gives the film a clear test. A courier caught in Raccoon City can make the outbreak feel dangerous without borrowing a familiar hero, but the story still has to give Bryan enough agency to carry a full movie. The delivery cannot become an excuse to rush from one creature reveal to the next.
