Mahershala Ali still cannot explain why the Blade movie announced with him in 2019 never happened. In a new GQ video interview, the two-time Oscar winner made it clear that the years of waiting were not a small scheduling inconvenience. He trained, turned down other work and moved his family while the Marvel project kept slipping.
Asked why the film stalled, Ali said, “That’s a Kevin Feige question.” Referring to Feige’s own description of the setback, he added: “100%. He should feel that way.” Feige previously said he felt like a failure for not getting the movie off the ground with Ali. Ali’s answer is blunt, but it is not a claim that he knows every decision made inside Marvel.
The time spent waiting was real
Ali said Marvel effectively held his schedule, making him say no to other projects. He spent a year preparing physically for Blade and said the training injured his knee. He also described uprooting his family and moving to Atlanta while production dates continued to move. His frustration is not just about losing a superhero role; it is about the work and life choices made around a film that never started shooting.
Marvel announced Ali as the new vampire hunter at Comic-Con in 2019. Directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange later exited the project, which also weathered the 2023 writers’ strike. Feige has said the studio did not have a script it felt confident it could turn into a good film. The project’s public history explains why it was delayed, but it does not give Ali the answer he says he wants.
Ali’s voice was heard briefly in a post-credits scene of Eternals, yet the starring film remained out of reach. In an earlier GQ conversation, he put his own position simply: “If they wanted to do it, we would've done it.” He has since said he is ready to move on from Blade questions.
The film that came out of the abandoned partnership
Ali did not leave the experience empty-handed. He had met Tariq through Blade, and the two went on to make Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, an original action drama written and directed by Tariq. Ali plays Latif, a devout Muslim hitman in Houston who is suddenly left to care for his three children after his wife dies. He is drawn into a violent conflict with Pastor Hwan Yoon, played by John Cho.

Tariq has explained that the new story grew partly from a frightening experience after the birth of his own child, when his wife became seriously ill and he had to search for breast milk. It is a personal starting point for a film that still makes room for sword fights and danger. Ali said the skills he developed while preparing for Blade could finally be used on this new production.
That does not make the lost Marvel film unimportant. It makes Ali’s next choice easier to understand. He wanted to do a grounded action story, and the partnership with Tariq gave him one shaped around faith, grief and parenthood. The film’s title page has the cast and confirmed story details.
No finished Ali-led Blade movie has been announced. The new film is not a secret replacement for Marvel’s character; it is a different project made by people who once expected to work on Blade together. For Ali, it is the work he can show audiences now, rather than another promise to wait.
