Mike Leigh says Tender Loving Care will probably be his final film. The 83-year-old director spoke remotely during the film’s San Sebastián press conference and explained that myositis has made movement increasingly difficult.
Asked directly whether he expects to direct again, Leigh said, “It’s more than probable.” He described the decision as a practical result of his physical condition rather than a loss of interest in filmmaking.
Myositis is a group of conditions that cause muscle weakness and inflammation. Leigh said he can no longer move around in the way a director normally must during preparation and production. He did not present the answer as a dramatic retirement announcement, but he was clear about the limits he now faces.
A film about people who continue caring
Tender Loving Care follows Amy, a government child-protection worker played by Kate O’Flynn. After a failed relationship, she moves back in with her best friend Rosie, played by Alice Bailey Johnson. Rosie also works in social services and faces anger, pressure and limited resources every day.
Amy’s parents, Birdie and Geoff, are played by Marion Bailey and Paul Jesson. They worry about their daughter while dealing with a health crisis of their own. The film moves between the work of caring for strangers and the much less organized work of caring for family.
Leigh called it a hard look at reality, but not a hopeless one. “We haven’t stopped being human,” he said. That idea runs through the film: institutions may be stretched and people may be exhausted, but compassion has not disappeared.
Leigh is still looking forward
The possibility that this is his final film gives the premiere extra weight. Leigh’s career includes Secrets & Lies, Vera Drake, Naked, Happy-Go-Lucky, Mr. Turner and Hard Truths. His work often begins with actors developing characters through long rehearsals before a final script takes shape.
Tender Loving Care continues that interest in ordinary lives rather than closing his career with a grand statement about himself. The focus stays on Amy, Rosie, Birdie and Geoff, and on the small decisions people make when someone else needs help.

The film runs 107 minutes. Georgina Lowe produced it, Lucy Bristow served as director of photography, Tania Reddin edited and Gary Yershon composed the music. It is playing the San Sebastián, New York and London film festivals, with Bleecker Street handling its United States release.
No general theatrical date has been announced. Leigh’s comments therefore arrive while the film is still beginning its festival life, not after a farewell tour has already ended.
