Clarisse Was More Than Mia's Grandmother

Queen Clarisse gave the first two movies their balance. Mia brought the panic, awkwardness, and teenage energy. Clarisse brought rules, patience, and a dry sense of humor. Their relationship turned a fantasy about becoming a princess into a story about two women learning how to understand each other.

Mia is no longer the teenager who needs lessons in waving, walking, or sitting through a formal dinner. The third movie can let her carry some of Clarisse's calm while facing problems her grandmother never had to solve for her.

The first movie ended with Mia accepting a life she had spent most of the story trying to escape. The second asked whether she could lead while other people tried to decide what a queen should look like. A third chapter can meet her after years of making those choices for herself. Clarisse's influence can remain visible in the way Mia leads, even if Andrews is not standing beside her.

It will still need to acknowledge the absence. The filmmakers have not explained where Clarisse is or how the story will refer to her. A respectful explanation will work better than pretending one of Genovia's most important people was never there.

Director Adele Lim told Variety that she wants to make a wish-fulfillment story about a woman in her full power. That direction suits an older Mia. It also gives the sequel a purpose beyond repeating the makeover and royal-training scenes from the original.

Andrews Leaving Does Not End Genovia

A third Princess Diaries movie was always going to feel different. The original arrived in 2001, when Hathaway was an unknown actor and Andrews was already a screen legend. Twenty-five years later, Hathaway is returning to the character as an adult star with a generation of viewers who grew up beside Mia.

That audience is not only looking for the same jokes with older actors. Many viewers now have careers, families, and responsibilities that did not exist when they first watched Mia discover Genovia. Lim's idea of a story about a woman fully using her power gives the sequel a natural way to grow with them.

Mia is also separate from Disney's official Princess brand. Pixel Twelve's current Disney Princess guide explains who is actually included in that lineup and why starring in a Disney royal movie does not automatically add a character to it.

The sequel can survive without Queen Clarisse, but it should carry what Andrews gave the series: warmth, firm advice, and comedy that never treated Mia like a fool. Seeing Andrews again would have been lovely. Letting her choose retirement is also a fair ending for the woman who already made Genovia feel real.
