In Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved, the actor is a movie director who brings his estranged daughter onto a new project. At the Toronto International Film Festival, Bardem addressed the obvious question: did he model this difficult man on a director he once worked with? His answer was no.

“I’ve been in situations that were brutal sometimes back in the ’90s,” Bardem said while discussing the film. He did not name a director or say the movie recreates one particular incident. He spoke about a working atmosphere he knew, then made the distinction between those memories and the fictional person he plays.
The comments give an edge to The Beloved without turning the interview into a guessing game. A powerful director can charm the people he needs and hurt the people closest to him. Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights and described a limited US qualifying run later this year, followed by a broader key-market release in early 2027.
