Ethan Hawke sees more than a gold-smuggling adventure in The Weight. His character, Samuel Murphy, is a father trying to get back to his daughter. Speaking ahead of the film’s September 18 U.S. opening, Hawke said the love and responsibility he feels for his own children helped him understand that drive.
The film puts Samuel in a Depression-era prison camp after he is separated from young Penny. A warden played by Russell Crowe offers him a dangerous deal: carry gold out of a remote mine, and he may earn his freedom. Every mile through the wilderness brings Samuel closer to his daughter, or to a betrayal that keeps them apart.
The role brought Hawke back to his own family
In a new USA TODAY interview, Hawke spoke about how raising four children changed the way he thinks about ambition. Parenthood, he said, reopened ideals that can get lost as life becomes complicated. He drew a direct connection between that feeling and Samuel’s determination to return to Penny.
He also pointed to his grandfather, who grew up during the Depression, as a model for the kind of man he wanted to play: capable and flawed, but willing to take responsibility. That is a more specific ambition than simply making Samuel tough enough to survive a river crossing.
The Weight is an outdoor survival story
Padraic McKinley directs the film, which also stars Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash and Sam Hazeldine. The cast spent months filming outdoors in Germany. Hawke told Sundance that the weather, forest and physical demands helped give the movie the rough texture he admired in older adventure films.
That approach suits a story in which the threat is not only a violent warden. Samuel’s crew has to carry heavy gold through hostile ground while deciding whom they can trust. Russell Crowe’s Clancy controls the bargain, but the men traveling together can undo it from within.
A different kind of lead role for Hawke
Hawke has played complicated fathers before, but The Weight gives him a more direct promise to keep: get back to his child. He told USA TODAY that he wanted to portray an old-fashioned good man without pretending that such a person never makes mistakes. The story tests what Samuel does after he makes them.
The actor also discussed his long creative friendship with Richard Linklater and the way his children introduce him to music and ideas he might otherwise miss. Those reflections make his comments about The Weight feel less like a routine action-film pitch and more like a window into why this particular character mattered to him.
The Weight opens in U.S. theaters September 18. Its Sundance premiere took place earlier this year; a streaming date has not been announced in the producer’s release.
