Unaccustomed Earth is an eight-episode Netflix family drama based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s interconnected short-story collection. The series premieres December 17, 2026. It follows Parul Chaudhury, a devoted wife and mother who returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts after five years in Mumbai and encounters Amit Mukherjee, a love she once left behind. Their renewed connection affects an Indian American Bengali community whose families and friendships have crossed generations. Freida Pinto plays Parul and Siddharth plays Amit. Indraneil Sengupta plays Parul’s husband Jai, Sarayu Blue plays Ruma Mukherjee-Weiss, and the ensemble includes Parveen Kaur, Adi Roy, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig, Justin Bartha, Jayant Kripalani, Swayam Bhatia and Palomi Ghosh. Madhuri Shekar adapted Lahiri’s work and serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Ritesh Batra executive produces and directs the first two episodes. John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri and Nisha Ganatra are among the executive producers. Netflix unveiled the first scene photos and Pinto’s comments in September 2026. The show has not premiered, so its central relationship and the eventual outcome of Parul’s choices should not be presented as known.
