Spirited Away: Live on Stage

Spirited Away: Live on Stage records John Caird’s theatrical adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki’s story. Filmed during the production’s 2022 run at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre, it follows Chihiro through the spirit-world bathhouse using actors, physical sets, costumes, movement and puppetry rather than new animation. Two complete casts were recorded. Kanna Hashimoto leads one version with Hiroki Miura, Tomohiko Tsujimoto, Fu Hinami, Satoshi Hashimoto and Mari Natsuki. Mone Kamishiraishi leads the other with Kotaro Daigo, Koharu Sugawara, Miyu Sakihi, Tomorowo Taguchi and Romi Park. GKIDS first presented the filmed production in North American theaters in April 2023 and later released it digitally and on Blu-ray. Both versions return to U.S. theaters for Studio Ghibli Fest 2026: the Kanna Hashimoto recording on October 1 and the Mone Kamishiraishi recording on October 8, in Japanese with English subtitles.
