Ashley Riot, a Riskbreaker agent of the Valendia Knights of Peace, enters the ruined city of Leá Monde after Sydney Losstarot's followers attack Duke Bardorba's home. Sydney leads the Müllenkamp cult and appears to command powers tied to the Dark City's buried history. Ashley's pursuit takes him through streets, catacombs, mines, and churches filled with dragons, undead, soldiers, and traps while the political story closes around him.

Vagrant Story is a solo action RPG built around deliberate positioning and equipment. Ashley can target individual body parts, chain attacks with timed inputs, raise or lower the Risk gauge, cast magic, and alter weapon affinities against different enemy classes. Workshops let him break down and combine weapons, armor, and shields; a blade that works against one enemy type may be poor against another. The map, keys, and room puzzles matter as much as combat preparation.
Keep several weapon types available, inspect enemy defenses before committing to a long chain, and use workshops whenever the story opens a new area. The original 2000 PlayStation game is a single-player release with the PS1's 4:3 image and loading breaks. Square later issued it on PSOne Classics for PS3 and PSP; those are re-releases, not a remake or a separate sequel, and Ashley's original campaign remains the 2000 PlayStation release.
