Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six puts you in charge of an international counterterrorism team, with preparation taking place before the shooting starts. Briefings establish objectives such as rescuing hostages, and the planning stage lets you choose operatives, equip them, and map out how the teams will move. A mission can go wrong because of the plan as well as your aim.

During an operation, you control an operative while other team members follow their orders. Coordinating different routes is part of the challenge: reaching an objective is not enough if another team has been left exposed or the hostages are in danger. The campaign develops beyond its initial rescue operations into a wider threat.
For a first session, spend time learning the planning interface and the difference between a route and an order. Read the mission objectives before choosing equipment, and revise the plan after a failed attempt instead of repeating the same approach at a faster pace. This is the original squad-based Rainbow Six, not the later competitive format of Rainbow Six Siege.
Red Storm Entertainment first released the game for Windows in 1998, with console and other computer versions arriving later. Rogue Spear is its sequel and has its own campaign; it is not an expansion required to understand the first game's basic systems.
