The Outer Worlds begins when you wake from decades in cryosleep and enter Halcyon, a distant group of worlds run by powerful companies. You travel between settlements, meet people caught up in their rules and decide whom to help. A conversation can open a way forward, and fighting is not the only response to every problem. Your skills and choices affect the options you get, so two players may solve the same quest in different ways.

Combat happens in first person with guns and melee weapons. Explore rooms for supplies, talk to people before deciding whose side to take and read the quest details when several groups want different things from you. Companions can join you on your ship and in the field; bringing one along adds another voice to conversations as well as help in a fight. The game is a story-led RPG, so your character build matters, but you do not need to decide every skill before you understand the colony.
Obsidian Entertainment made The Outer Worlds and Private Division published it on October 25, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch version and Steam launch came later; Steam's 2020 date is not the original release date. The gallery shows dialogue, settlements, your ship and combat rather than repeating the cover art.
