The Operative: No One Lives Forever casts Cate Archer as a former cat burglar recruited by UNITY, a secret organization that monitors threats to world peace. The campaign travels through a stylized 1960s world of rival agents, assassinations, laboratories, snowy mountains, jungles, and Cold War intrigue. H.A.R.M. operatives provide the central threat, but briefings, optional intelligence, and character conversations keep the missions closer to a spy adventure than a simple sequence of firefights.

Monolith's LithTech-powered first-person game supports direct action and quieter solutions. Archer carries pistols, rifles, submachine guns, explosives, a sniper crossbow, and period-flavored gadgets. Missions set objectives, record discoveries, and reward careful exploration of side rooms and hidden items. Disguises, silenced weapons, alarm avoidance, and enemy awareness can change the pace, while the game still allows a loud response when stealth breaks down.

For a first playthrough, read the briefing and check the equipment screen before leaving. Use a suppressed weapon or a gadget when a patrol can be isolated, but do not waste rare ammunition on every guard. Search offices and storage rooms for intelligence and supplies, then save before a large set piece. The objective list is useful when the route opens into several buildings.

This page covers the original 2000 Windows release, not the PlayStation 2 port, which added different content, the Game of the Year edition, or NOLF 2.
