Subnautica begins after your ship crashes on an ocean planet. You leave a small lifepod, swim through nearby reefs and collect materials that help you stay alive. Oxygen is the first thing to watch: the deeper or farther you swim, the longer it takes to reach the surface again. You also need food and water, and the tools you make let you explore places that were too dangerous or too far away at the start.

As you gather resources, you can build a base, store supplies and use vehicles to travel deeper. New areas bring unfamiliar animals, darker water and more clues about what happened to your ship. You do not have to fight everything you see. Looking around, listening and turning back before your oxygen runs low are often better choices. The pictures below show shallow exploration, a constructed base, a dangerous creature and a vehicle; they give a clearer sense of the game than a list of crafting materials alone.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment released the full PC version of Subnautica on January 23, 2018, after a long Early Access period. Console versions followed. Subnautica: Below Zero is a separate later game set in the same world, not an expansion included with this original release.
