Sonic Mania is a new side-scrolling Sonic game built around pixel art, running, jumping and routes through colorful stages. It revisits familiar places such as Green Hill with changed layouts and surprises, and adds stages made for this adventure. Dr. Eggman and his robots are once again the opposition.

The original playable trio is Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Sonic is the blue hedgehog, Tails is the orange fox with two tails, and Knuckles is the red echidna with large gloves. Tails can fly and Knuckles has his own ways through obstacles, so choosing a different character changes how you approach a stage. Local co-op and Competition Mode provide ways to play with another person.

Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games developed Sonic Mania, with Sega publishing it. The first console release was August 15, 2017; the original console platforms were PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Windows PC followed on August 29. Sonic Mania Plus and its extra characters are later additions, not part of the original trio.

In the United States, the ESRB rates Sonic Mania E, for Everyone, with Mild Cartoon Violence. The cited rating record lists PC, PS4 and Xbox One; it is not being presented as a separate verification of the Switch rating.
