Sea of Thieves is a shared pirate world. You begin by choosing a ship and a voyage, then head out to find islands, treasure and other crews. Sailing is hands-on: someone steers, someone can adjust the sails, and the crew must watch the map and repair damage when trouble starts. A small ship can be managed alone, but sailing with friends makes it easier to share those jobs.

On land you can follow clues, dig up treasure, fight skeletons and carry what you find back to the ship. The return trip matters because treasure is not yours to spend until it is sold. Other players may help you, pass by or attack, so watch the horizon and decide when to avoid a fight. A cannon battle can leave holes that must be patched before the ship sinks. The gallery shows the ship, crew, loot and combat so a new player can see what those jobs look like, not just the game's logo.
Rare developed Sea of Thieves and Microsoft published it on March 20, 2018 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. It was also available through Xbox Game Pass at launch. Steam, PlayStation 5 and many new adventures came later. The screenshots on this page show the living game after years of additions; the release date and original platforms refer to the 2018 debut.
