RimWorld starts with people stranded on a distant planet. You choose a place to land and give your colonists somewhere to sleep, food to eat and work they can do. You do not move one hero around directly. Instead, you set jobs and priorities, plan rooms and watch your colonists carry them out. A good grower can farm, while someone with medical skill is better placed to treat injuries.

The colonists have moods, skills and relationships. A bad bedroom, untreated wound or lack of food can make daily work harder. The game also sends events such as weather changes, traders and attacks. Its AI storyteller controls the pace of these events, so two colonies with the same starting plan can have very different stories. You can build in forests, deserts or colder areas, then expand into crafting, research, animals and travel when your group is ready. The gallery shows the starting map and character screens alongside colonies that have grown much larger.
Tynan Sylvester and Ludeon Studios developed RimWorld. It was playable in earlier versions from 2013, but its full 1.0 release arrived on October 17, 2018 for Windows, Mac and Linux. Later expansions add systems beyond the base game. This profile describes what the original game asks you to manage before those extras are added.
