The Obra Dinn left port with a crew and returned years later with nobody aboard. You play an insurance investigator sent to find out what happened. Walk through the ship in first person, inspect a person's remains and use a special watch to visit a frozen moment surrounding their death. You can look around that scene while it is still, listening to a short piece of dialogue and studying where everyone stood.

Your book records the ship, its people and the scenes you discover. It does not simply hand you the answers: you compare faces, uniforms, names, places and conversations to decide each person's identity and fate. A scene can give you a useful clue about someone other than the person whose death brought you there. If you are unsure, keep a note and return after seeing more of the ship. The monochrome picture can take a moment to read, so rotate the camera and check the whole room before making a guess.
Lucas Pope developed Return of the Obra Dinn, and 3909 published its PC and Mac release on October 18, 2018. It is a deduction game, not a combat game. The gallery avoids solved identities and shows the watch, the book, ship spaces and an example of an unfinished deduction.
