Pyre follows a group of exiles in the Downside, a fantasy world where ancient contests offer a chance to regain freedom. You travel with the group, meet its members and learn why each person was sent there. Conversation and character choices matter alongside the action.

The contests are called Rites. You pick three exiles for a team and try to put out the opposing team's flame before yours is extinguished. Characters have different abilities, and Talismans and Masteries provide ways to develop them. Rather than making you restart the story after every defeat, the campaign continues through both wins and losses.
There is also a separate Versus Mode for two people playing locally, or one person against the computer. It is not an online mode, and the game does not have co-op. The single-player campaign and local competitive matches are distinct ways to play.
Supergiant Games developed and self-published Pyre. It launched July 25, 2017, on PS4 and on Windows, macOS and Linux through Steam. The United States PS4 edition is rated ESRB E10+, for ages 10 and older, with Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, an alcohol-use descriptor and a tobacco reference. The cited ESRB record specifically lists PS4, not every computer version.
