Game Overview

Nintendo 64

Joanna Dark enters the Carrington Institute's covert world when a distress signal from a kidnapped scientist sends her into dataDyne's headquarters. Rare's 2000 N64 shooter then widens the conflict from corporate espionage to a war between alien species, with the Carrington Institute and dataDyne shaping the conspiracy. The campaign uses mission objectives, key items, and difficulty-specific tasks instead of treating every stage as a simple shooting gallery.

Each stage can be played as Agent, Secret Agent, or Perfect Agent. Harder settings improve enemy behavior and add more demanding objectives, while completing missions unlocks weapons and arenas for multiplayer. Joanna can use alternate weapon functions and mission equipment to complete objectives rather than simply eliminating every enemy. The N64 Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and three- or four-player modes; only limited deathmatch and Challenge options work without it.

New players should read every objective before leaving a briefing, because the game often hides its best solutions behind tools and timing rather than raw accuracy. Its split-screen Deathmatch supports two to four players and offers extensive rule, arena, weapon, and character settings. The original Nintendo 64 game is distinct from the Xbox 360 remaster, Perfect Dark Zero.
