Pentiment is a story adventure set in a Bavarian town and nearby abbey in the 1500s. You play Andreas Maler, an artist working on a manuscript when a murder disrupts the community. Monks, farmers, craftspeople, and nobles all have their own lives and suspicions. The mystery unfolds across many years, so an early choice can affect what the town is like later.

You spend your time talking, visiting places, reading, and deciding which leads Andreas should follow. Choosing his background changes some conversation options, but you cannot learn every secret or speak to everyone before time moves on. At key moments you must decide whom to accuse, often without complete proof. There is no combat system; the tension comes from people, limited time, and the consequences of being wrong.
Obsidian Entertainment developed Pentiment, and Xbox Game Studios published it on November 15, 2022 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Its pictures resemble illuminated books and early printed pages, giving the historical setting a distinct look. The official cover uses that manuscript-inspired art and the game's own title.
