Monster Hunter: World sends you to the New World as a hunter working with a research expedition. You take a quest, follow signs of a monster through an area and fight it with the weapon you brought. A hunt is not a quick duel: the creature can move between places, use the terrain and force you to pause, heal or sharpen your weapon. Afterward, materials from the hunt help you craft armour and weapons for tougher assignments.

You can choose from 14 weapon types, ranging from a heavy great sword to the mobile insect glaive. They feel different enough that trying a few in the training area is useful before settling on one. Your scoutflies can help you follow clues through a map, and the small Palico companion travels with you. You can play quests alone or with other hunters. The gallery shows tracking, several monsters and the size of the areas where hunts take place, rather than presenting a single creature as the whole game.
Capcom released Monster Hunter: World for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018. The PC version arrived later that year, on August 8. Iceborne is a later expansion, so this page covers the original game and its New World hunts.
