Microsoft Flight Simulator is a flight simulation built around the pleasure and challenge of flying real-world aircraft. You can begin with short training activities that explain the cockpit, takeoff and landing, or choose an airport and explore. The world uses map data and online services to recreate terrain, cities and weather. That makes a flight over a familiar landmark feel different from a small, fixed set of tracks.

A beginner does not have to understand every switch in an airliner. Start with a light plane and use the assistance settings while learning to keep it level, turn gently and manage speed. Later, you can plan longer routes, adjust weather and move into more complex aircraft. The game is not a conventional racing game: a safe landing is a goal in itself, and looking out of the window is part of the appeal. Online data improves the scenery, so the experience can vary with connection quality and installed world updates.
Asobo Studio developed Microsoft Flight Simulator and Xbox Game Studios published it on August 18, 2020 for Windows PC, including Xbox Game Pass for PC at launch. Xbox Series X|S versions followed in 2021. This is the 2020 game, sometimes called Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to distinguish it from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Later aircraft and world updates do not change its original release date.
