Metroid Dread is a side-scrolling action adventure starring Samus Aran. She travels to planet ZDR after a signal suggests the dangerous X parasite may still exist. The Federation sent E.M.M.I. research robots first, but lost contact with them. Samus must find out what happened and reach a way off the planet. If this is your first Metroid game, you can follow this mission without knowing every earlier story detail.

You move through rooms linked on a large map, fight creatures, and return to places that were blocked before. A door, narrow passage, or high ledge may be impossible at first but reachable after Samus finds an upgrade. Her Arm Cannon can fire beams and missiles, while movement abilities open shortcuts and fresh routes. The map records places you have visited and is worth checking whenever you feel lost. E.M.M.I. zones change the pace: these machines hunt Samus, so escaping and hiding usually matter more than trying to shoot them with ordinary weapons.
MercurySteam developed Metroid Dread with Nintendo, which published it for Nintendo Switch on October 8, 2021. Nintendo later added extra difficulty and Boss Rush modes, but the original game and release year are 2021. The official poster shows Samus in her suit with the E.M.M.I. looming behind her and the authentic Metroid Dread logo.
