Journey begins with a robed traveler in a broad desert and a mountain visible in the distance. You move toward it through ruins, sand and darker places. The game does not give you a long list of spoken instructions or a combat class to build. Its central act is movement: walk, glide and use a scarf-like trail of cloth to rise or cross parts of the landscape.

Sometimes another traveler appears. That person can be another player, but the game does not introduce them with a conventional name tag or chat box. You can continue together or part ways. The images below move from a cloth bridge and old structures through the open dunes to a lit interior and the mountain beyond. They give a sense of the journey’s changing spaces without turning the story into a checklist.

Thatgamecompany developed Journey, and Sony Computer Entertainment America brought the original to PlayStation 3 in North America on March 13, 2012. The PC release shown by the official Steam art and screenshots came later; PC is not listed as a 2012 launch platform. The U.S. ESRB rates the original PS3 game E (Everyone) for Mild Fantasy Violence. Do not confuse that original rating with the separate Journey Collector’s Edition bundle, which has its own rating.
