Hotline Miami is a top-down action game set in an alternative 1989 Miami. A masked man receives cryptic messages on an answering machine, then enters buildings filled with enemies. Each room is small enough to read at a glance and dangerous enough to punish a careless rush. You have to watch doors, sightlines and weapon positions, then react quickly as you move from one room to the next.

The game’s striking colors and pulsing soundtrack sit next to explicit pixel-art violence. Its fights use firearms and close combat, and failed attempts send you back to try a different approach. The five official gameplay images below show separate rooms and the on-screen score/combo interface, not a sanitized version of what players will see. This is the first Hotline Miami, not the 2015 sequel Wrong Number.

Dennaton Games developed it, and Devolver Digital published the original Windows PC game on October 23, 2012. Mac, Linux and console editions followed; they do not change the initial launch. The U.S. ESRB classifies Hotline Miami M (Mature 17+) for Intense Violence, Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Strong Language and Crude Humor.
