Hollow Knight begins above a vast underground kingdom called Hallownest. You play as the Knight, a small masked traveller carrying a nail, which works like a short sword. The game looks sideways: you move through caves, jump over gaps, fight bugs and search for exits that lead into new areas. Some routes are blocked until you earn another ability, so it is normal to remember a doorway and return later.

The map is part of the adventure, not an always-complete GPS. You can buy a map for an area, then use a quill to fill in rooms as you explore. Benches let you rest, save and change Charms, which are items that adjust what the Knight can do. Hitting enemies gives you Soul, a resource you can spend to heal or use a spell. Healing takes a moment, so watch an enemy's pattern and wait for a safe pause instead of trying it in the middle of a hit. The gallery includes actual map and Charms screens, plus views of combat and different caverns so those words are easier to recognise.
Team Cherry developed and published Hollow Knight. It first launched for Windows PC on February 24, 2017; Mac, Linux, console versions and free content packs followed. The original PC release date is not the date of the later physical Switch cover. The cover shown here uses Team Cherry's official Hollow Knight title artwork rather than fan art; later gallery images may show features after free updates.
