Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe arrive in Alexandria to kidnap Princess Garnet, but Garnet already wants to leave the castle. The escape pulls Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, and the knight Steiner into a journey across Gaia as Queen Brahne's invasion expands under Kuja's influence. Freya, Quina, Eiko, Amarant, and other companions add their own histories to a story about war, the crystal, identity, and finding a home.

Final Fantasy IX uses Active Time Battle for turn order and gives each character a fixed role rather than a freely interchangeable job class. Equipment teaches abilities: keep an item equipped until its ability is mastered, then the character can retain the skill. Trance fills during combat and changes a character's commands for a short period. Synthesis combines items into stronger equipment, while Chocobo Hot and Cold, Tetra Master, and other diversions sit alongside the main route.
Read the ability descriptions before selling old gear, and let each character's strengths guide the party instead of forcing one build on everyone. The original 2000 PlayStation release is a four-disc game with the original models, movies, loading behavior, and balance. Later PS4, PC, mobile, Switch, and other editions add boosters, high-definition assets, or quality-of-life features; they are ports or remasters, not the original PS1 presentation.
