Far Cry 4 takes place in Kyrat, a fictional country in the Himalayas. Ajay Ghale comes back to carry out his mother's final wish and is quickly pulled into a conflict between ruler Pagan Min and a rebel group called the Golden Path. You see the world through Ajay's eyes. The main story points you toward missions, but much of the experience is deciding where to travel and what to tackle next. New players do not need to have played Far Cry 3 to understand Ajay's situation.

Kyrat includes villages, forests, cliffs and snow-covered areas. You can approach enemy outposts quietly, scout from a distance and use a bow or a silenced weapon, or start a louder fight with other equipment. Wildlife is not only scenery: an elephant can turn a fight upside down, and other animals can be a danger when you least expect them. Vehicles, a gyrocopter, grappling routes and a wingsuit open different ways across the landscape. The Golden Path's missions and some choices affect which characters you support, while optional activities give you room to explore before moving the story on. There is also a separate cooperative open-world mode for playing with a friend.
Ubisoft Montreal led development with support from other Ubisoft studios, and Ubisoft published Far Cry 4 on November 18, 2014 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. It is the fourth numbered Far Cry game, not an edition of Far Cry 3. The official Ubisoft cover shows Pagan Min in front of Kyrat's mountains; the gallery uses Ubisoft's own gameplay images of outposts, vehicles, wildlife and the landscape.
