Deus Ex places JC Denton, a newly deployed UNATCO agent, in a 2052 world damaged by terrorism, disease, pollution, and economic collapse. A stolen supply of the vaccine Ambrosia pulls him into a conflict involving the National Secessionist Forces, government agencies, and a conspiracy far larger than his first assignments suggest. Missions move through recognizable locations, including Liberty Island, New York, Hong Kong, and Paris, while conversations and discoveries change how Denton understands the people giving him orders.

The game combines a first-person shooter interface with role-playing systems. Skill points improve areas such as computer use, electronics, lockpicking, medicine, and weapon handling. Nanotechnological augmentations add active and passive abilities, while weapons, ammunition, grenades, multitools, and lockpicks support different routes through the same objective. A locked door can be opened, hacked, bypassed, or ignored; a guard can be avoided, persuaded, disabled, or fought.
For a first run, put early points into one reliable way of opening routes and carry more than one solution for security obstacles. Read emails and talk to civilians before acting, because optional information often reveals safer entrances or useful context. Save before entering a new area so you can test an approach without losing progress.
This page covers the 2000 Ion Storm and Eidos game, including the later Game of the Year package, not the PlayStation 2 port Deus Ex: The Conspiracy, the fan overhaul Deus Ex: Revision, or a modern remaster.
