Crusader Kings II looks like a map game, but the person in charge matters as much as the land they control. You choose a medieval ruler and try to keep a dynasty going across generations. A marriage, a vassal’s opinion or the identity of an heir can alter the future of your realm as surely as a battle can. The game follows rulers and their families rather than treating a modern nation as a permanent player character.

The interface puts a map beside character portraits, councils, events, family trees and holdings. The five official screenshots below show those parts directly: the starting-map selection, a council and marriage message, a battle result, a house history view and a holding construction choice. You do not need to learn every button at once. The basic question is who rules now, who may rule next and which relationship or resource is most urgent.
Paradox Development Studio developed Crusader Kings II and Paradox Interactive published it for Windows PC on February 14, 2012. Later Mac and Linux versions are not presented as original 2012 launch platforms. This page is about the base game, not its many expansions. The U.S. ESRB rates Crusader Kings 2 T (Teen) for Alcohol Reference, Mild Language, Mild Violence and Sexual Themes.
