Chants of Sennaar casts you as a traveler in a tower whose five communities no longer understand each other. Their languages appear as unfamiliar symbols. Look at signs, watch what residents do and listen to conversations to begin working out what those symbols mean.

A notebook helps you keep track of the words you are learning. Each new place gives you more context, so a symbol that seemed unclear in one conversation may make sense after you see someone use it beside an object or action. Learning a language is the main puzzle, rather than a skill you choose from a menu.
The floors of the tower have different architecture, colors and ways of life. Finding a route through them also involves exploring rooms and solving other puzzles. Some sections ask you to stay out of sight, so the lack of a regular fighting system does not mean you can wander through every area without risk.
Rundisc developed Chants of Sennaar, and Focus Entertainment published it on September 5, 2023. Choose it if you enjoy comparing clues and changing your mind when new evidence appears. The bright artwork comes with a lot of close attention to language and context; it is a different kind of evening from watching a mostly wordless story or simply arranging a room.
