An old man narrates the Kid’s journey through the remains of Caelondia after the Calamity breaks the world apart. Paths form under the Kid’s feet, and each trip away from the Bastion brings new creatures, weapons and pieces needed to rebuild the refuge. The painted environments are viewed from above at an angle, so recognizing solid ground matters as much as watching an enemy.

Combat combines two equipped weapons, a shield and a rolling dodge. A hammer works close to an opponent, while ranged weapons let the Kid attack from farther away. Back at the Bastion, buildings let you change equipment and improve weapons. The story can be played again through New Game Plus; the PC version also offers remappable keyboard-and-mouse controls and gamepad support.

Supergiant Games developed Bastion, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment publishing the original release. It first arrived on Xbox 360 on July 20, 2011, followed by Windows PC on August 16 that year. PlayStation, mobile and newer Xbox releases came later.
